The Government College of Education for Women Coimbatore was started in the year 1956 to cater to the need of young teachers in the schools of the Tamilnadu State. The college is working under the jurisdiction of Tamilnadu Teachers Education University (TNTEU), Chennai. It was re-accredited by NAAC in the third cycle in 2016.

Students can pursue B.Ed and M.Ed programs in regular mode and M.Phil and Ph.D programs in part-time mode in the college.
Admissions to the teaching programs are given based on the guidelines and reservation policy of the affiliating university, TNTEU. Students for B.Ed program are shortlisted through Single Window Counseling conducted by Lady Willingdon IASE, Chennai.
